Today I joined Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Herb J. Wesson, Jr. to send a clear message to private companies operating detention centers — Los Angeles will not stand idly by while these companies profit from separating families. We will not be complicit in supporting organizations that violate human rights. Today’s unanimous Council action instructs City staff and the City Attorney to draft an Interim Control Ordinance to temporarily ban private detention centers. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants, I am proud to stand in solidarity against the cruel and inhumane conditions at these centers.
