Today the City Council approved a resolution I co-introduced supporting Senate Bill 1422 (Bradford) which would allow law enforcement agencies and our City Attorney’s office to use State-licensed certified cannabis testing laboratories to test cannabis and cannabis products. If left untested and unregulated, cannabis can leave consumers at risk for harmful chemicals and dangerous fungi.
This motion complements the public safety efforts I’ve led in Los Angeles on regulating cannabis. Since the March 2019 adoption of the utility shut-off ordinance, based on a motion I presented, the City has successfully shut down utility services at more than 270 unlicensed cannabis operations. 167 unlicensed locations have remained closed as a result of disconnecting utilities. Unlicensed shops undercut the legal businesses that pay taxes and follow the rules. I’m proud of our partnership with law enforcement and City agencies and will continue to hold unlawful operators accountable for their role in undermining the regulations governing commercial cannabis activity.
