As part of my continued effort to invest, elevate youth voices and participation, today I introduced a motion with my colleagues Councilmember Kevin de LeΓ³n, Councilmember Nithya Raman, and Councilmember Mike Bonin to establish a Youth Department. I see the need to reform systems that continue to hold many youth back. 200,000 Youth in LA live in poverty, 68,000 are disconnected from school and job opportunities, and over 3,000 are experiencing homelessness. A centralized Youth Development Department focused on enrichment programs and jobs training as an early intervention strategy, will provide our most economically disadvantaged neighborhood greater access to resources that were desperately needed pre-pandemic, but worsened by academic disruption and job loss.
