Today marks the 50 year anniversary of Title 9 that passed as a part of the Education Amendments of 1972. The regulation states that no person should be excluded from participation in any academic, extracurricular, research, occupational training, or other education program or activity.
For years, female athletes fought for equal opportunity to join sports programs in their communities. Today, they continue the fight for equal pay. Much has progressed since the passing of Title 9, however, we still have more work to do. When girls play sports they learn important skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence. Let us continue to support female athletes and acknowledge their triumphs through history.
