In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we illuminated City Hall tonight in orange to raise awareness of the “Every Child Matters” movement, which recognizes the missing Native American children at residential boarding schools. Throughout the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries, Native children were forcibly sent to boarding schools hundreds of miles away from their traditional home to assimilate to American culture. In these schools, children were starved, abused, and deprived from practicing their traditions. These cruel acts against the Native American community separated countless families and left long lasting wounds in the community. This is an important moment to recognize the victims and survivors of this event and demand justice for the lives lost at these boarding schools. 🧡
