On Latina History Day, we recognize community activist and trailblazer Irene Tovar.
Irene Tovar has roots in Pacoima and has been active in the Latino community since the 1960s. She worked alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta on issues concerning migrant workers, access to state jobs, and children’s rights. She was also the first Mexican-American appointed to the State Personnel Board under Governor Jerry Brown’s administration.
Tovar has made an imprint in higher education, founding the Chicano Studies program at CSU Northridge and the Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC), where she serves on LAMC’s advisory board.
