California Officially Reopens!

Today, California officially reopens! The color-coded state reopening system is no longer in effect, capacity limits are lifted, physical distancing requirements are no longer required and mask mandates are less stringent.
Masks are still required for any form of public transit, transportation hubs, healthcare settings, indoors at K-12 schools and childcare facilities, state and local correctional facilities and detention centers, homeless shelters, emergency shelters and cooling centers. Masks are also required for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals in indoor public settings and businesses. Workplaces are subject to Cal/OSHA COVID-19 requirements. Businesses may still require masks and must clearly communicate masking requirements for their premises. For more information on the updated Los Angeles County health order visit: https://bit.ly/35oez8J.

We still need to remain vigilant and get vaccinated. In general people, are considered fully vaccinated:
-Two weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or
-Two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine
If you don’t meet these requirements, regardless of your age, you are NOT fully vaccinated. Residents of the Seventh Council District are eligible to receive a free vaccine at our pop-up vaccine site at the Sylmar Recreation Center located at 13109 Borden Avenue, Sylmar, CA 91342 every Tuesday to Saturday. This week’s hours are from 9 AM to 3 PM. No appointments are needed. ⁣

Concerned Sylmar residents contacted my office regarding an illegal dumping site and miscellaneous debris on the sidewalk and curb on Astoria Street. My staff worked with the Bureau of Sanitation to have the bulky items and the miscellaneous debris removed.

Los Angeles Homelessness Service Authority (LAHSA)

I’m pleased to announce that through our collective efforts with our city departments, the encampments located on Arroyo St. underneath the 210 freeway have been cleared of personal property and debris. Six individuals experiencing homelessness all received housing assistance through our partnership with the Los Angeles Homelessness Service Authority (LAHSA) which allowed the Los Angeles Department of Sanitation (LASAN) to clear and sanitize the area underneath the freeway.
I will continue to work with our City departments and law enforcement to ensure that our public rights of way are maintained and most importantly safe for our community to use.

I’m pleased to announce that through

Joint Meeting of the Public Safety Committee and the Board of Police Commissioners

Last summer people took to the streets, not just in Los Angeles, but around the world to protest for racial justice and civil rights. To truly make our communities safe, we need to address the root causes of crime and poverty, and implement reform that addresses systemic inequalities and alternative policing strategies that involve the community.
On June 16, I’m convening a joint meeting of the Public Safety Committee and the Board of Police Commissioners to discuss public safety reform in cities and police departments across the country. This historic meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about the successful models of community based policing safety initiatives being implemented in other cities.

Proud of the Legislative Package

#ICYMI: 12 of my bills this year have moved on to the Senate! Our legislative package this year covers a broad swath of issues including homelessness, removing the term “alien” from state laws, equestrian rider safety, addressing our school nursing shortage, and even climate change issues like extreme heat.
I am proud of the legislative package my team and I developed this year, and I am looking forward to working with my Senate colleagues on addressing these important issues. #CALeg
