Have Your Say in the
L.A. City Budget. — Today 5:30!

As you may know, the Mayor has released his proposed Fiscal Year 2021-22 Budget. The next step for this process will start next week as the Budget and Finance Committee will hold hearings to discuss the budget.
But before we go into any budget hearings, we want to ensure that the public has the opportunity to weigh in on what is important to them. A budget is a reflection of values and we want to hear input from our community members on where you want to see money allocated in our community.
Please click the RSVP link and select the session in your area.

New Property Tax Benefits for Seniors

New Property Tax Benefits for Seniors

As of April 1st, Proposition 19 expanded property tax benefits for those 55 and older, the disabled, and victims of natural disasters, allowing them to transfer their property’s assessed value and tax basis when they sell their home and purchase a new one, or any value, anywhere within California. Previously, this tax base transfer opportunity was limited to only 10 counties statewide. Additionally, eligible homeowners can now transfer their base-year assessed value to a more expensive home, whereas the previous law limited the transfer to a home of equal or lesser value. Eligible homeowners can also transfer their assessed value up to three times, while under previous law they could only move with their assessed value one time. In effect, the property tax base for seniors is now “portable.”

Applying Slurry Seal to More than 80 Street Segments

My staff worked closely with the Bureau of Street Services to prioritize and apply slurry seal to more than 80 street segments throughout Pacoima. Applying slurry seal to asphalt that has been resurfaced in the past few years is a very cost-effective, one-day technique to help maintain the condition of the street, sealing any cracks and gaps that would otherwise allow water to infiltrate to the base and weaken the street, causing potholes and other failures. This maintenance process adds another 5-7 years to the life expectancy of the asphalt, significantly increasing the time until the street needs to be resurfaced again.

For additional information on upcoming slurry seal and resurfacing projects in the district, please visit the Streets LA website at https://streetsla.lacity.org/ and select ‘Road Repair’. If you have any questions on the slurry seal process or would like to recommend another street in the area in need of resurfacing, please contact my Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600 or Sylmar District Office at (818)756-8409.

Funds to Address Homelessness

My bill #AB71 – to create the first ongoing source of funds to address homelessness, passed out of the Assembly Rev and Tax Committee! It is headed to Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development. Thank you to my colleagues for the important discussion and support! As part of our collective effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, my family and I were vaccinated at our Hansen Dam vaccination site. It is our shared responsibility to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Sadly our community has been among those hardest hit, which is why we must all be vigilant in getting the vaccine.
Residents of the Seventh Council District are eligible to receive a vaccine at one of our walk-up pop up sites regardless of immigration status. To make your FIRST DOSE appointment, contact my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga District Office at (818) 352-3287 to make an appointment for your vaccine.
Appointments can be made at other City of Los Angeles sites through: https://carbonhealth.com/covid-19-vaccines/los-angeles

Illegal Dumping in the Alley

I’m pleased to share the recent progress made in Pacoima through Operation Bright S.P.O.T., a targeted neighborhood clean up program I launched in an effort to improve the quality of life. Clean ups focus on our major corridors and include illegal dumping pick-ups on residential streets. My team completed work on Glenoaks Boulevard between Paxton and Daventry Street in Pacoima. We removed a massive quantity of illegal dumping in the alley that blocked the resident’s garage doors.
See a commercial corridor or residential street in your area that needs cleaning? Please call my Sylmar District Office at (818) 756-8409, Pacoima District Office at (818) 485-0600, or Sunland-Tujunga District Office at (818) 352-3287 or you can report it to our city crew via 3-1-1. It’s free, easy, and can be done four easy ways:
•Dial 311 from your phone
•Report on their website, https://myla311.lacity.org/
•Download and use the “MyLA311” app from your smartphone
•Call the Bureau of Sanitation Customer Service Center (800) 773-2489
