Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had an incredible community partner, Khalsa Care Foundation. From the start this crisis, they and other members of the Pacoima Sikh community, worked to quickly develop a hot meals program; one which would expand to include city-wide food distribution. Over the course of several months, they have served tens of thousands of meals residents with disabilities and those enduring financial hardship.
Last week, we once again partnered with Khalsa Care Foundation, to distribute backpacks and food packages that include bread, produce, cheese, milk, and COVID-19 masks to roughly 500 families in our district.
Join me in expressing gratitude for charitable organizations like Khalsa Care Foundation who have shown generosity to our community during these unprecedented times.

Over the last several months, we have worked with our partners @lafamilyhousing and @lapubliclibrary Street Fleet to provide books and school supplies to our district’s children and families experiencing homelessness. Many of these families are residing motels and don’t have the same level of access to resources for their kids.
It takes a village to care for our kids. Working together, we will close the gap and help mitigate the challenges they experience from not being the physical classroom. All students deserve a chance to have a strong academic school year.
If you know of any student and family that are in need of educational resources—or in need of housing, or other services—please contact my Pacoima Office at (818) 485-0600.

Last night, there was a 4.5 #earthquake that shook the #SanFernandoValley. Fortunately, were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The Los Angeles Fire Department has issued a warning for residents to prepare for aftershocks. Please have an emergency safety plan, and a disaster kit prepared.

I have also sent a letter to the California Air Resources Board regarding the reports of methane leaks from #SunValleyGeneratingStation. I have not forgotten about this and I continue to work on the State level to demand answers and find solutions to address the #methaneleak happening in #SunValley to assure the cleanest air quality for #AD39 community.

I will be joining Los Angeles Community College District’s student-led town hall on Thursday, September 24th at 3:30 pm to discuss the future of learning for students, technology access, equity, food insecurity, law enforcement, and more. This town hall is sponsored by AFT Local 1521.

Last week, my office partnered with the “We Count LA, San Fernando Region, San Fernando Valley Complete Count Committee” to host a caravan event to raise awareness for the 2020 census.
Did you know that each resident that completes the 2020 census brings approximately $1,950 in federal funding per person, per year? That’s $19,500 over a decade to your community for use in:
• Law enforcement, fire departments, and other services
• Schools, school lunches, housing
• Healthcare and hospitals
• Public transit system and road repair
• Medicaid, Head Start, and SNAP
• Block grants for community mental health services
Communities like ours have been historically undercounted. In the 2010 Census, neighborhoods in the Northeast San Fernando Valley scored among the highest in low census participation.
In Los Angeles, only 53% of households have responded to the 2020 census. That means our city will lack sufficient resources for the next 10 years.
It is critical to make sure you and your family are counted. Complete your census today at 2020census.gov

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced a 55-hour weekend full closure of eastbound lanes on Interstate 210 (I-210) in the Los Angeles community of Sylmar for paving work.
The closure is scheduled to begin this Friday, Sept. 18, on eastbound I-210 at Interstate 5 (I-5) in the San Fernando Valley. Residents and local businesses located near the freeway may experience noise, vibrations and dust associated with construction activities.
Closure schedule:
• Begins on Friday, Sept. 18 @ 10 PM
• Ends on Monday, Sept. 21 @ 5 AM
Closure details:
• Full closure of eastbound lanes of I-210, from I-5 to Roxford St.
• I-5 connector to eastbound I-210
• Eastbound Yarnell St. on and off-ramps
• Motorists will be detoured to the I-5 Roxford St. off-ramp and State Route 118 (SR-118) to reach their destination (See map above).
• All closures are weather permitting and subject to change.
• Some closures may start and end later.
• Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to check traffic conditions before leaving to their destination by visiting the Caltrans Quickmap.
Work being done:
• The work on I-210 is part of a $135.5 million project replacing all lanes of I-210 with new pavement from Wheatland Ave to I-5.
• The on- and off-ramps, connectors and adjacent shoulders will also be rehabilitated.
• Overhead sign structures, traffic loop detectors, center median barrier, and the guardrail system will be upgraded.
This project is funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
Caltrans reminds drivers to be “Work Zone Alert” and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” If you need more information on this work or other projects, visit the link below to contact Caltrans.
