Yesterday, I presented AB 2421 on behalf of my colleague, Assemblymember Bill Quirk. I am proud to present this important measure because AB 2421 ensures everyone from #AD39 has access to mobile phone services during wildfires and power shut-offs. We have to make sure that people can contact first responders and their love ones during an emergency. AB 2421 passed out of Assembly Local Government Committee with an 8-0 vote.

Today the City Council approved a resolution I co-introduced supporting Senate Bill 1422 (Bradford) which would allow law enforcement agencies and our City Attorney’s office to use State-licensed certified cannabis testing laboratories to test cannabis and cannabis products. If left untested and unregulated, cannabis can leave consumers at risk for harmful chemicals and dangerous fungi.
This motion complements the public safety efforts I’ve led in Los Angeles on regulating cannabis. Since the March 2019 adoption of the utility shut-off ordinance, based on a motion I presented, the City has successfully shut down utility services at more than 270 unlicensed cannabis operations. 167 unlicensed locations have remained closed as a result of disconnecting utilities. Unlicensed shops undercut the legal businesses that pay taxes and follow the rules. I’m proud of our partnership with law enforcement and City agencies and will continue to hold unlawful operators accountable for their role in undermining the regulations governing commercial cannabis activity.

The City announced a new initiative called LA Represents — a legal assistance initiative to help thousands of Angelenos who are facing extreme hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pro bono legal services program will provide support to vulnerable tenants, domestic violence victims and low income individuals with employment, consumer debt, and bankruptcy matters. I’ve been working closely with Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to create an opportunity for local restaurants to provide meals at shelters throughout the City. My office has been helping restaurants in our district take advantage of this opportunity, and I’ve instructed the City’s Economic Workforce Development Department to provide technical assistance at Business Source Centers for restaurants seeking to apply.
If you’re a restaurateur interested in providing meals or other catering services to shelter programs operating during COVID-19, I encourage you to sign up here: https://bit.ly/2AnwfoN
