States Dropping ‘Dehumanizing’ Terms

“Luz Rivas remembers seeing the word on her mother’s residency card as a child: “alien.”
In the stark terms of the government, it signaled her mother was not yet a citizen of the U.S. But to her young daughter, the word had a more personal meaning. Even though they were going through the naturalization process, it meant the family did not belong.

“I want other children of immigrants, like me, to not feel the same way I did, that my family did, when we saw the word ‘alien’,” said Rivas, now an assemblywoman in the California Legislature.”

At a young age, I learned how powerful words can be. I don’t want any other child to ever feel like I did – like my family did not belong in the US. That’s why I authored #AB1096 to remove the dehumanizing word, “alien,” from all of our state laws and was proud to have it signed into law in September.

Thank you to the AP for publishing this piece and highlighting how much work our country needs to do to restore dignity to immigrants. #NoOneIsAnAlien #ImmigrantStories

Encourage Everyone to Support Local Businesses

AD 39 is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, a spirit which has been tested tremendously during the outbreak of COVID-19.

Back in April, I worked with the California Governor’s administration and my state colleagues to pass a historic and critical tax relief for Small Businesses because they are the backbone of our economy.

That’s why I encourage everyone to support local businesses in AD 39 for this year’s #SmallBusinessSaturday! #ShopLocal

Received a Civic Leadership Award

Throughout my years in office, I have had the privilege to learn more about the history, culture, and contributions of the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

As a member of the Select Committee on Native American Affairs, it was such an incredible honor to receive a Civic Leadership Award by Fernandeño Tataviam Tribal President, Rudy Ortega, for my support for the tribe.

Thank you so much for this incredible recognition! #AD39 #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

Thanksgiving Distribution Drive-Thru and Walk-ThruThanksgiving Distribution Drive-Thru and Walk-Thru

The holiday season can be a time of great uncertainty and pressure for working families. The pandemic has only amplified food insecurity in my district.

That is why I was excited to partner with SEIU Local 121RN, MEND Poverty, and the Pacoima Neighborhood Council for a timely Thanksgiving Distribution Drive-Thru and Walk-Thru.
Thanks to our dedicated partners, volunteers, and staff, we distributed over 400 Thanksgiving meals to #AD39 residents.

Every care package included poultry items, fresh vegetables, bread, rice and beans, grains, fresh fruits, essential canned goods, sauces, fresh herbs, cornbread mix, spicy chilis, and activity books for the kids.
Additionally, my team held mobile district office hours and provided assistance on state resources.
